Windows XP forum: .net 2.0 and .net 1.1

.net 2.0 and .net 1.1

I just installed .net 2.0 from windows update. After installing 2.0, windows update still says 1.1 to install. Does that mean 2.0 and 1.1 are seperate and I need to install both?

There are a few programs I have that need .net 1.1, won't 2.0 be fine for them or do I really need to install both 1.1 and 2.0?

It SHOULD be backwards compatible with 1.0 and 1.1, but it is Microsoft we're talking about, and they're usually least compatible with themselves.

I too was thinking of upating it with latest updates. After reading your posts perhaps I'll be more watchful on this topic & allow MS to cover-up their pitfalls first.

By the way the product code of .Net 2.0 (KB829019) is still not available to be downloaded from Microsoft Downloads as a stand-alone desktop download.

Perhaps its still in test phase with the users who download it now.

You only need one version

You can actually go into add remove programs remove all .net installs and patches then go to the Windows update site and both 1.1 and 2.0 will be presented as options (for now). If you choose to reinstall 1.1 there will also be one or more patches that will you will need to install after the initial install. IF you install 2.0 no other .net patches will appear after you reboot.

While in theory you should be able to upgrade to 2.0 and have every things work you should be aware the possibility exists that some software developers code may fail following the upgrade. ESRI one of the best known GIS application developers have known issues with 2.0 and many things will start failing with their applications if you install the upgrade. The solution in their case is to back out all .net installs then reinstall 1.1 plus patches. Now I'm not saying ESRI is the best example to hold out to the world while they are known as industry leaders in the GIS field they also seem to produce code with many little got ya compatibility issues.

So what should I do? Should I uninstall everything and install just 2.0? Or should I uninstall everything and install 1.1 then 2.0?
