Windows XP forum: Windowns messenger really annoys me...

This is a Windows XP forum, if you are a Mac fanatic, why are you even on this forum? Please leave this forum for those folks that need help with Windows XP or MS apps based problems. You can advertise your personal preferences elsewhere.

I simply blocked msmsgs.exe and msnmsgr.exe with my firewall (Outpost)

I have found that Outlook and other MS applications cause Messenger to run at startup. Not having the patience to find all these, I simply renamed the file by changing msmsgs.exe to msmsgs.ex.

So far, there have been no problems.

click on start run and paste in this string:
drag your mouse over the whole string 'till it highlites then hit "c" while holding down the ctrl key - this will copy it exactly. to paste, left click in the run box and hit ctrl and v at the same time this will paste it, click okay and ignore any MS warnings- it took me one year to find this fix and only ten seconds to do it!

This will work for getting them to icon stage when go to OutLook. And that did not irrate me but last night my son who does Tech work told me how to get rid of the icon even This is XP Home, it maybe different in others Click Start--settings--Control Panel- Administration Tools- Double Click Services--Scroll down and highlight Messenger--Right click the high lighted line and choose properties. Click stop button--Select Disable or Manual on Start up--type scroll bar Click okay and you shouldn't see those icons again--they been gone from mine 15 hours now.

I have not had anymore Window Messager even at starting of OutLook Express, I have XP Home and what I read Professional is same technical directions. Do you have them to the icon stage?? I had to do a different process to get them there if I rember right. Anyway sence I did this, I can't even find thos little icons in their little nest in the startup.I have XP Dell Demension.

You can certainly configure messenger not to load with windows but if you open the task manager it's still there running in the background. but if you really want to get the edge on messenger go one better and uninstall it,There is a small zip file that you can download that uninstalls it and removes the entry from the registry.If anyone is interested I will look up the name of it and post the URL. There is the other alternative. Go to your control panel and remove it though the Add Remove Windows Components but beware, in the past I tried this and it removed Outlook Express as well.

This will keep Windows Messenger from loading, but allow it to be loaded:

1) Click Start, Run...
2) type gpedit.msc and click OK
3) Expand User Configuration
4) Expand Administrative Templates
5) Expand Windows Components
6) Select Windows Messenger
7) Double-click "Do not automatically start Windows Messenger initially"
8) Select "Enabled" and click OK
9) Close the Group Policy editor

Now you can log in without having it load, and your kids can load & use it if they want.

you can remove windows messenger through add remove componenets in add remove programs in control panel.

1. go to ur windows installation drive and open windows folder and then from folder options( it is in tools in menu bar) enable show hidden files and folders.

2. now open a folder named inf and open a file sysoc.inf in notepad.

3. in this file locate a line which is
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

remove the word hide and save the file

4. now go to add remove programs in control panel and click on add remove window components. in the list of programs remove check mark from windows messenger.

hence u will get rid of windows messenger

This is for Windows Messenger.

If you are having trouble with the Messenger Service, that would be another thing, and I thing that someone already told you what to do about that.

I also have this problem. You can uninstall Windows Messenger using your Operating system CD. Dothis by insterting the Cd in the drive and it should load itself, if not then go to My Computer and Right Click on your CD Drive and Click Autoplay. After it loads click on Preform Additional Tasks and uncheck Windows Messenger from the list and click next.This will uninstall Windows Messenger. You can also open Windows Messenger and go to Tools-Options and to the Preferences tab and uncheck "Run Windows Messenger When Windows Starts and that should also fix it.

Go on windows messenger press tools at the top then when a new window opens click prefrences and swich off windows messger when windows starts
