Problem with Invalid System Time

Hello,
I own a compaq nx7000 laptop with windows XP. I have recently encountered an "Invalid System Time" alert pop-up message box appears everytime I login.
The message is as follow:
"The time or date on your system is invalid. Please use the date/time applet in the Control Panel to properly set your system time and date."

After changing the time system, I did a virus scan but found nothing. Now, whenever I log into the Windows, the system time keeps on changing back to "January 1980 12:00AM" and the above mentioned message box keeps appearing.
What should I do to resolve this problem?
Please help.

Check the computer's "clock".

Also known as the CMOS CLOCK or more accurately the RTC (Real Time Clock), this clock is powered (most machines) by a small battery on the motherboard. If it's weak or dead, such may happen.

Every PC I've owned has a manual to tell us how to change or set this clock. Start there.

Setup Utility - ROM

Are you refering to the ROM(bios)? I went into the setup utility but cannot find the RTC setting.

It's why I have you check the manual on how to set the time on your machine. Some machines it's the first menu you see on the BIOS screen, others it's the first group. But I can't tell you the exact steps since I don't own your laptop and manual. However I can bet I've set more than a thousand clocks on PCs and it's always near the first screen.
