Windows toolbar locks everyday & after standby

I have had this problem for about 2 years. My laptop running Windows XP SP1, Athlon XP 2400 starts fine and runs fast and perfectly for 12 to 15 hours or so each day. After a certain time, or immediately if I go into standby mode and then fire it up again, shortly thereafter the Windows toolbar at the bottom and the Start menu lock up. If I have open programs, I can still use them, and alt-tab between them, though they are all somewhat slow to respond.

I discovered that if I unplug the ethernet connection, which is connected to a router and my home DSL connection, the problem disappears completely. If I plug the ethernet back in, the problem comes back shortly thereafter. A reboot seems to solve the problem. I have run anti-spyware etc. with no results. Any ideas?

Not to dismiss your issue, but Windows 98 had me rebooting every 2 hours for some time till I improved it to 4 hours.

The slow to respond is easy to explain after standby. Some drivers didn't recover or support standby. It's clear to me that since you are at SP1 you may be of the type that doesn't update the machine or its drivers. When you get over that, then you may find the driver or OS patch the fixes your issue.

For now, just reboot every 8 hours.

SP2

I am not really 'of the type' who doesn't update things. I am pretty thorough when it comes to security updates. (Hey, I actually remember DOS and what a wonderful thing cranky old Windows 3.0 seemed.) It seems to me that SP2 was an update to include stronger security, with things like firewalls and other things I had already taken care of. I read a lot about SP2 and couldn't find that much to recommend it. I have consciously steered away from SP2 because in my experience, a major update can often break as many things as it fixes. I may yet take a breath and give it a go however.

What I would be curious about is if anyone else had this actual specific problem and what fixed it. When I do searches for this problem on bulletin boards etc., all I can generally find is 1000 people with viruses and adware slowdowns, which it seems pretty clear this is not. If there were a sure fix, I would do it. If it means blindly updating drivers, patches and reinstalling things, I probably would pass as that's generally a good way to burn 10 hours and still probably not fix it.

I noted what I go for. Drivers and OS patches. You made your choice to pass on SP2 but may not understand or maybe you do that the 800 pound gorilla is twisting the driver and products out there to support SP2. In fact I've run into software that will not work without SP2. Hint: Avid video editors.

Best of luck with your driver updates and as one more example, our external USB 2.0 drives could not run CHKDSK until SP2. It was some item SP2 addressed.

Please differentiate beteeen 1. Strat Menu. 2. Quick Launch. 3. Notification Area. Or do you mean the entire blue strip at the base of your desktop?

Taskbar

The entire taskbar along the bottom of the screen locks up. I can alt-tab between open programs but may not be able to see their tabs on the taskbar.
