ffdshow IS a codec pack. It's based on libavcodec, which is an independant implementation of all the more common codecs out there. It does Divx, Xvid, 3vix, there's at least partial support for WMV, and it also has a number of audio codecs included as well. All in one nice little <2.5MB download. Even better, is that libavcodec is written to use SIMD (MMX, MMXExt, SSE, SSE2, 3DNow!, 3DNowExt) instructions as much as possible. And since it's focsed only on decoding, it's often much faster than the official codecs.
There's no need to download 50MB worth of codecs, many of which may conflict with one another. The few things ffdshow can't handle, you can always track down via Google.
