Windows Repair

Hi There all you brainy lot can any of you help me. I have a problem with my sons computer, it is running windows home XP SP1 When you try to start the computer it gets to the screen where it places a picture for the desktop no other icons and then a rectangle banner comes up. In the top part of the banner the blue line it says EXPLORER.EXE UNABLE TO LOCATE COMPONENT. In the grey part of the banner it says "This application has failed to start because BROWSEUI.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. I have tried to start in safe mode but the same thing happens. I have gone into f8 to try to start from the last known good configuration but to no avail. Someone told me you can repair windows from the windows CD without fully reinstalling. I put the windows cd in and when it went so far it offered me two options 1) to install a fresh windows or 2) to repair windows I chose the repair route, but all that came up with was a command line and when I type help a lot of commands that I do not understand or know how to use. Can any of you chaps help me out. I will thank you now in anticipation of your response's Kindest Regards Tony B

do as Bob has said - it should solve the problem .
In future when you boot to the CD you dont want to go to the "recover console" which appears what is happening - elect "NO" to the recovery console, and then you should be given the choice to do a repair or install.
If Bobs suggestion doesn't work also try the following at the recovery console
----
chkdsk /r
----

You can learn about the recovery console in Help and Support - its your life line when you cant get into the system so it's Worth knowing the basics.

you do NOT want to choose the "repair" option!

to the best of my knowledge, this is the same as "clean install" without the format option....

i.e. you lose all your data....

..

Can't you just install a second OS on another partition, then use it to pull out the documents you need from the non working OS?

Actually, nevermind...

I don't think it's possible on a single harddrive. You need more than one harddrives, or partition one harddrive into more than one logical drives. If you don't already have one of the above, and can't get into Windows at all, then I guess you can't make a new partition for the other OS.

It was just an idea, tedious at best, and won't work in your case. You can buy an extra harddrive and install it, but... well... you know...

installing another windows is possible

Hi guys,

You don't need another hard drive to install a second Windows. When you go to install Windows form cd and select new installation, it will ask you where you would like to install it. You can then tell it to install on the free space, leaving the current system alone and it will create an extended partition and install itself on this.

Before going as far as copying over all your data though, you might try copying the missing DLL from this fresh installation to your current one. If this works, scan for viruses and away you go...

chkdsk, SFC, windows repair ,and clean install

It is my understanding that:-
1/ "chkdsk /r" - checks your hard disk for errors and if any core systems files are corrupted they are repaired from within the hard disk backup set (if I understand things correctly?)
2/ "SFC /scannow" - just repairs the basic systems files from your XP CD installation CD to your hard disk
2/ Repair - does the above, plus reinstalls/repairs windows components - no formatting done and no need to reinstall 3rd party programs - problems may occur if a slip stream CD of SP2 is not used as well if WMP has been upgraded.
3/ Clean install - this reinstalls XP, all systems folders are deleted and reinstalled and you need to reinstall 3rd party programs, even though their directories are left untouched - no hard disk formatting occurs.
Therefore, in any system files error messages the following above should be carried out in order given.

Bad arrangment of Browserui.dll

i had same problem and tried to do everything. Reapiring from windows cd, in recovery console, but din't find solution. Remove your hdd from your computer and fix in other xp running computer. Renamd file browserui.dll (in windows\system32) to browserui.old. Copy same file from other xp working well computer to the same location. Fix back hdd on your computer and enjoy running xp well. After that just use hijack and winsockfix.exe to confirm this.
i did same and work well not lose any single file.
