Invisible Desktop icons

In troubleshooting a problem on my computer (which is now fixed), all my desktop icons disappeared (even the wastebasket is gone!). I've tried dragging and dropping shortcuts onto the desktop, but they just disappear. Any ideas? Must I reinstall Windows ME and if I do, will I lose all my apps and data files?

Nothing in your post tells if you are actively keeping the virus, trojans and spyware off the machine.

Windows option to show/hide desktop options

At least in Windows XP, you can right click on the desktop, select the "Arrange Icons By" menu, and then either select or deselect "Show Desktop Icons" in the submenu.

If "Show Desktop Icons" is off, all of your desktop icons will disappear.

Perhaps this is a feature that has been there since Windows ME?

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! My support person (whose execution has been cancelled) also thanks you. This was a much faster and more pleasant solution than having to reinstall Windows and restore my apps and files (which were backed up). Good Karma is coming your way!
