Windows Me forum: No Sound

No Sound

I'm going to go get my sisters computer, HP, and bring it to my house to work on in just a little bit. She has windows me and there is no sound. She says she had sound a couple of days ago. I ran "Spybot" and she has "avast" installed running regular scans. Anyway, I noticed there was no volume icon, and control panel has it checked and greyed out. The volume setting is set like on 'zero' and is greyed out and can't be adjusted. I plan on following the 'help' troubleshooting guide. Last resort might be to reformat, though not sure if this will help the sound issue.
Any suggestions welcome, thanks in advance.

Spybot's teatimer is known to interact, interfere, slow a machine down so I'd uninstall spybot for now. NOT THE CAUSE OF THE SOUND FAILURE.

This sounds like the driver or the sound card itself has failed. Since it's too hard to fix I often get some USB sound card (under 10 bucks) to fix that. Examples at http://www.geeks.com/products_sc.asp?cat=762

I own a few of that black one.

External sound card

Ain't the young generation "great". nephew came over, adjusted the bios, and now we have sound. took him all of maybe 15 minutes.
now my sister has someone else that can fix computers. and life goes on.

I apologize that I don't have that answer here but try to offer fairly cheap fixes short of a repair counter. Makes you wonder how the bios got changed.

No way. That's why she has me. LOL. But people do come over and stay and visit from time to time, so maybe. And there is, and has been for the past week, an out-of-country family member visiting from England.
But its fixed. All's well that ends well.
