Upgrading from an ME to 2000 Pro

Can I just insert the boot up disks, run the CD and expect the system to upgrade or do I need to wipe out the system and do a clean install. The system by the way is kind of old as it has a 20GB HD, very little memory compared to todays standards. It is currently running windows ME and I want to upgrade it. #1 will it be able to handle windows 2K, and #2 is it even worth it?

Windows ME is a DOS based OS. Windows 2000 is not so all drivers and software may not make the transition.

-> Your choice here, but collect drivers and print out your BELARC ADVISOR report before you do this.

You only revealed the unit has a 20GB hard disk. My old p3-600 laptop came with an 11GB drive and ran Windows 2000 very well.

you can do it as an upgrade.

The previous post explains quite clearly why you shouldn't.

then I have to do a clean install. This might be the way I go anyway because from what I hear that is the best and most sure-fire way to know it is going to load properly. I already have the boot-up disks and the CD so I should be good to go.

note the excellent suggestions posted by Bob Proffitt.

Personnally (but it's only me thinking) a clean install would be better, taking the care to check hardware compatibility.

Microsoft will not detect all your hardware and provide drivers. To this day, Microsoft expects the OS installers (you) to prepare for the install with a complete machine inventory and be ready with the needed drivers.

There is no sign Microsoft is changing their view that installing an OS takes some knowledge about the machine.

Windows ME does NOT qualify for the Windows 2000 Upgrade CD. However, it's my time and I save myself plenty by using the full version Windows 2000 CD and Microsoft does allow this upgrade.

My results are good 100% of the time, but I know not to have spyware, etc. and I know that Microsoft never provides drivers.
