Using a SmartPhone as a Stand Alone PDA

Is it possible to use a Smartphone, (Treo or Blackberry) as a stand alone PDA, i.e. without having cell service? I work for a large company and can't change my cell phone or carrier.
I don't need the cell service or "push" e-mail, just a pda to sync with my corporate e-mail account (Lotus Notes), and to view Excel, Word, docs, etc. I don't really want a traditional stand alone pda like the iPAQ, or Tungsen E2 as I prefer using a keyboard to responond to copius amounts of e-mails.
We use ActiveSync and am not sure if there are any issues with syncing or using a Treo or Blackberry without a cell provider.
I know this sounds silly, but thank my i/t Department.
