Long Distance Relationship: Need help with Technology Advice

Hi all,

This will be my first post.

I am currently living in UK and will be moving to Canada for about 6 months. I was wondering if there are any devices which would enable me to stay in contact with my fiancee. My aim is to be able to see her or call her anytime I want and vice versa. Thus, is it possible to accomplish that goal with a PDA for each of us? Might be a little expensive but is there another alternative? If each of us get a PDA with a webcam and wireless internet connection, we would be able to use the PDA's internet connection, and with the help of programs such as Skype, we will be able to call, thus saving the cost of using international phone cards right?

Perhaps the second option is to get a ultra portable computer for both of us.

Please do advice me on what I should do, or what you all would recomment so that I can constantly communicate with my fiancee. Thank you.

Be sure you are fully aware of the caveat: You must be within range of a public hotspot or wireless network you are permitted access to in order for you to access the internet. If you have that covered, then an SDIO or CF webcam can be connected to the PDA, making it work.

Other points:
1.) If you wish to use Skype, it only supports WindowsMobile devices. (Sorry, no Palms.) You can browse the lists of confirmed supported models by clicking here.

2.) You could also make it work by using Yahoo, MSN, AOL, or other instant messengers which support video messaging. That would enable you to avoid any Skype charges, and also broaden the public computers you could potentially use to communicate should your primary device (PDA or UMPC) go down. IM clients are available for both Palms and Windows Mobile devices, and also come in portable varieties that can be run entirely off of a flash drive on any public computer without the need for installation. Just a thought.
