HP iPAQ rw6828 (PDA) - break downs and data loss

I purchased mine about 8 months ago. It runs the Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 platform. Here are a couple of major problems for me with the unit.

Break down: Within 8 months the input housing has become loose and the unit won't recharge. Needs to be replaced.

Inadequate Backup: There is only limited backup software for the unit. SMS, emails and unit settings will be lost with any reupload.

Unsatisfactory Support: HP advised me there is software I may purchase to transfer the SMS and Email data to my PC... (but why is that capacity not included in the ActiveSync software provided? There are many ways of expressing this, but "derr" is adequate.)

I hope you've not experienced the same frustration, but let me know if you have any advice about where to download good (free?) software for transferring SMS using the MS Windows Mobile 5.0 software.
