Psion 5MX to PC connection problem

I cannot get my 5MX to connect to my laptop (via the psion RS232 lead and USB connector). It worked once but I have not been able to backup since and am getting worried about data loss. has anyone had similar problems? I have followed the Psiwin instructions carefully.

Also my screen is a bit dodgy and I am aware of the limited lifespan of my psion but have got very adept at typing with 2 thumbs so am reluctant to change to another type of PDA. Backup and synchronicity issues may force my hand eventually. Which PDA might be a suitable next step up for me? What have you gone for when your precious psion finally gave up the ghost?
