Norton Ghost 9.0 Problem - Copied disk won't load...

Im trying to upgrade my existing 80Gb SATA to my new 250Gb IDE drive but running into some difficulties.

I used Norton Ghosts 9.0 copy disk feature, selecting the Check source for file system errors, Check destination for file system errors, Set drive active (for starting OS) and Copy MBR options.

It seemed to copy across fine, and the two disks looked indentical in windows explorer. I shut the computer down, disconnected the 80Gb disk and made sure the 250Gb disk was in the black master cable selector connection. However the 250 Gb drive doesn't load up properly the black windows screen with the loading bar comes up as normal but then it freezes on a a blue screen with the Windows XP logo.

I'm know reasonably what I'm doing with computers, but not that much, so I thought I'd ask around for help. Did I do something wrong somewhere or miss something out? Any suggestions for how I can get it to work?...

XP will not like the change from SATA to IDE and you get to reload the OS.

Yep, I'm using XP with Service Pack 2...

Is there any way arround it without having to re-load Windows?

Just that I bought the system 2nd hand on e-bay and don't have the original windows cd for it.

I could try and get hold of a new copy of windows but it would be rather a hassle...

Without the CD you won't run this OS long. Call Microsoft to get a replacement CD before it goes down hard.

Had been hoping to avoid needing a windows cd by keeping regular back-ups, however if itll be helpful I dont mind paying out for one.

By reinstalling with a new copy of windows will I lose all my settings and programs though? Only just finished getting my computer set-up properly again and the prospect of having to do it again just to change to a different sort of disk doesnt really fill me with joy...

Why would you:

a. have to pay out for this? A replacement CD was all of 15 bucks for me.

b. Reinstall the OS.

I can only guess your story was incomplete. I can't read more into your post that you reveal.
