PC utilities forum: New Macrium user question

Thanks for the info...C/Net highly recommended it. I do have Ghost, but I haven't used it in a long time, I forgot I had it. LOL Most likely not updated. Its the 14 version. I do intend to image it to an external hd...but here is the irony that I found out later. I am trying to copy or image my XP -P3 C drive...now I assume in the future it won't work if I have to or want to reinstall it in another desktop computer, which would have different drivers and etc. I guess it would only matter if I keep my old desktop, which I intend to anyway, unless of course the worse happens to it.

The latest version of Ghost is 15 which they say you need with Windows 7 although I used 14 with it before they came out with 15. They say they're working on a new version to support Windows 8, but don't have it yet. You can install and use Ghost 15 with Windows 8 for 30 days, but you can't activate it. I used it to back up my Windows 8 system before the 30 days were up, and it worked just fine. I'm not doing anything serious with Windows 8 right now anyway; I just wanted to get it while it was still $40, and have it in case I need it for something. As long as you're on XP, you can use versions of Ghost as old as 9.

Well, I cloned my C drive to an exterior hd with Ghost 14. This was the first time I did it, but somehow ran into a problem after. After the clone a box appeared with the title "Autoplay" appeared with the ribbon speeding below as files were constantly changing, until it remained on one of those long system response files and on occasion another message that a certain file was not able to be found and it just hanged that way for such a long period as the ribbon kept going on still. The computer was inoperable while this was going on that i eventually had to shut off the pc and reboot/. Are you familiar with Ghost and autoplay?

I've never seen the autoplay option w/Ghost. The first time I use it after running Liveupdate is the One time backup which backs the whole system up. After that I set it up to do automatic weekly full system backups. I just brought the Ghost 15 Help and did a search for autoplay - it didn't find it. Are you by chance referring to the Windows autoplay for when you insert a disc? If you're going to do a backup with Ghost 14, I believe you have to install it first. I've read that with 15 you don't have to do that, but I've never tried that option.

I did install Ghost 14. Maybe it was windows autoplay, though I never heard of it. Its a coincidence that right after completing cloning my C drive with Ghost 14, this box appeared with the blue title "autoplay" and my files were speeding through as the blue ribbon was doing its thing. I thought this was Ghost's way of verifying the completion of my clone. What is Windows autoplay?

Whenever you insert a disc in a Windows system, your autoplay options come into use. There's an autoplay applet in the Control Panel where you can set or change the options. If you go into the Windows Help and Support and type in autoplay in the search box there, there's a plethora of good info there.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971029 is not telling the entire story. I'm seeing all autoplay to fail after this on some machines. At least we can go in and turn it back on but imagine your everyday user. They have to hit up their support channels.
