Eraser not working as it should when deleting files?

I have heard that when you delete files on your computer just by deleting them to the recycle bin and then emptying the recycle bin, that it doesn't completely remove the file from the hard disk.
So I tried Eraser and used it to delete all the files I wanted to permanently delete. However the problem I come across often is that the free space available on my hard drive decreases when it should increase as I delete my files, particularly the larger sized files.
Why does this happen?
How can I fix this?
Is there a better program for this purpose?
