minimize disk image size on external drive?

I want to use Easeus Todo software and If I clone my hard drive or create a disk image and place the result on an external drive, will the "back up" have to be as large in size as the source disk? Is there a way to minimize the disk space used in the target drive so that I can store other files and folders on the external drive? If so, how would I do that?

drive image....but I'm only familiar with host and Acronis. You'll just have to check the options as you create the image.
