Hey it's Gordon with an update:

It's humorous to watch you two play so nicely together! (all deference to Kees the King )
I wish I could get my kids to play so civily, it's usually a blood bath!! LOL!

You were both right. I didn't give you enough information to answer the question, my bad.

"Umbutu" is a Linux based freeware os. I learned of it RIGHT HERE! on Rick Broda's Cheapskate board.
Of the many good things he had to say, he said "it's handy to have around, in case Windows goes down, you can still access your info. Since my daughter has killed her share of laptops, ipods.....yes plural, and not to mention the new phone every 6 mo. I thought I'd take some good advice and download it. TA-DA! It was there when I needed it and worked great.
Used Umbutu to take off all the files I wanted. Then I was able to get to windows repair screen. "#5. Restore to factory original settings." A couple hours and Windows repaired itself...nice new laptop!!

If Ubuntu (I don't know Umbutu) is running from cd, and your recovery disk is dvd, that might mean that the dvd-part of your drive is broken, while the cd part still works. It's different hardware inside.

Same, but the other way around, if Ubuntu runs from DVD and your recovery disk is CD. You didn't tell.
