Internet Download Manager - download driectly from server?

Hey,

I'm using Internet Download Manager to download files. But I also have a VPS (Windows Server 2008) with a lot of large files I want to transfer to my local computer. So I want to use Internet Download Manager to get these files relatively quickly (standard FTP is too slow).

Is it possible to use IDM to download directly from my server? I have only logged into my windows server using remote desktop, so I don't know what URL to use to download the files. How do I figure this out?

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but when I use FTP (filezilla) it downloads at about 10-15 kb/s. This may be because I'm manily using bad connections at shared wifi places while I travel (hostels, internet cafes, etc).

When I use a download manager it simultaneously opens up multiple downloads for the one file and downloads them all at once. So I typically get speeds of 80-90 kb/s using a download manager which is faster.

about 3rd party download managers.

All browsers have their own download managers now and I've never had to use anything else. I don't understand how a download manager can speed a download up when the restricting points are a slow internet connection and/or internet traffic.

And like Ken says, FTP is too slow? I've never suffered that.

Any ideas on know how to find the URL path for files on a windows server so I can download with the download manager?

The administrator of that server will be able to tell you if he happens to have a webserver installed and running on that fileserver, with the files you need accessible via an url.
But I'm afraid he'll say he hasn't and you have to use other means.
