Automated backup across network

A friend wanted to add a backup process for his home computers. He has a desktop system running Windows 7 Home Premium and a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. He has an external Seagate drive connected to the desktop computer and shared on his home network. He had planned to use the built-in backup software that comes with Windows 7 but has found that it does not support backing up to a network drive when you have different versions of Windows 7.

So the question is... Is there a reliable, low cost backup program that will work with a shared drive regardless of Windows versions?

The list is fairly long for such titles. I'll note Syncback since I can backup to almost anywhere and the backup is not locked up inside some backup software.
