Re: Scandisk keeps restarting
If you are using 95 98 or Me, when your computer is booting press repeatedly F8, this wil make windows to show the start menu, choose "save mode" and press enter key, let windows start till it finishes booting, run scandisk & it will probably end the task just fine, if it don't, instead of choosing "save mode" choose "command Line, command mode or prompt" whatever your version says, as soon as your computer boots you will see "C>", it's the prompt, just key the following: "scandisk /all" & press enter, this command will run MS-DOS version of scandisk, let it finish, to restart windows you can press the reset button in front of your machine or just press "CTRL-ALT_DEL" simultaneusly, Note: if you have Windows ME use your start disk (Floppy) because Win Me has no command line.
A different case is XP, use your install CD, let it boot & follow the instructions to check your system, everything is menu driven so it's not hard to do it.
if your machine does not boot from floppies or CD's, make shure your computer bios is set to boot from floppy & CD, when your machine is just starting press "DEL" to enter setup, go to advanced options & make the start order to first boot from floppy, second from CD & third from hard disk, press F10 to save configuration & boot, if your machine is brand name you must read your manual to access setup, the menus wil be a litle different, but it's the same idea, remember to configure your bios (setup) as it was originally when you finish.
