Why did microsoft take out the VI50 codec?

I can't play old video clips now. It's calling for codec IV50 which from what I read it has been removed by XPs service pack one. Its also been removed on another computer that runs WIN2K. Now people are are wanting $$ to sell the file. MS stinks.
