System mechanic professional 9 ........ problems

by Dango517 - 8/30/09 6:31 PM

We are using Iolo's new System Mechanic Professional 9, as a trail version. It is the end of our year with them and they have sent it to us to replace SMP 8 that we used last year.

Buggy, buggy, buggy and most of it appears to be in the hardware portion of the registry.

D-Link DGE - 530T Gigabyte Ethernet adapter (rev. B) was missing and we had to reinstall driver
Ethernet adapter control missing
Continually need to install D-Link DGE-530T Ethernet Adapter Ethernet adapter
Second Life desk top Icon missing. We had to reload software
Dynex mouse driver problems
Total SMP 9 program crash
New sidebar gadget in SMP 9 crashes
And possibly .... IE8 browser continually crashes when program is closed

Other problems with Iolo's registry repair software that have continued from last year:

Registry back up program stalls system start in Windows Vista Business OS too often. It also uses software compression which is perhaps unnecessary with the new larger hard drives and may create problems with recovering the system should there be a need to use it.

On average Iolo registry repair program finds 5-6 registry problem each time it is run, perhaps far more then there could possibly be.

Iolo has been working on two new features over the last two years. I believe this year the registry repair improvements have caught up with them. Registry repair software can be a good thing if it is not too aggressive. I believe Iolo has crossed the line into aggressive registry repair software this year. It has only been released for a few weeks but these early signs are not good.

Final word on System Mechanic Professional 9 at this time ........... 'not ready for prime time, a BETA at best". Could be a major headache for it's users in the near term. With the release of Windows 7 just around the corner this might be a bad year for Iolo.

Too bad, I usually speak highly of Iolo.
