Create a Restore disk

I would like to know if there is a way I can create a complete restore of my system including programs and data.
I have a dell XPS 410 running XP 160 gig hard drive 4 gig memory.
I recently purchased a 500 gig WD EXTERNAL HARD drive I was informed by dell that I needed a particular kind of software.

I actually am tired of having to reinstall all my programs after reinstalling windows. Whenever their is a problem with my system DELL says it's windows and i need to do a reinstall.
Any suggestions?

Research Acronis True Image and Norton Ghost. Read reviews and buy the one you like most.
