Norton Ghost and Hard drive Bad sectors

by chandwpl - 8/10/04 11:46 AM

Hi All,

I hope someone can shed some light onto a frustrating problem that I have with my PC.

Running Norton Ghost 2003 on a 40gb (Disk 1 say) hard drive. Want to clone Disk 1 to a bigger, 120gb hard drive (Disk 2)

Norton Ghost looks easy.....and I went through the motions...and then suddenly it comes across BAD SECTORS on Disk 1.

It asks "Do I wish to continue" I pressed YES.

It asks "Ignore subsequent bad sectors?" I said YES...........then I waited for 15 mins as the program seemed to freeze.

*** 1st question.......Does anyone know if the program has frozen or whether it is doing something? (The light on the front of the PC is continuously lit).

OK, so I reboot. As Disk 1 is partitioned, I managed to ghost my C: drive over to the new hard drive. All OK.

The problem/bad sectors are on my E:\ drive which are all my MP3's and WAV files. I used CHKDSK, but this doesn't seem to do much apart from error
reporting.

*** 2nd question.......Any program out there which fixes bad sectors? (CHKDSK /F returns "Stopped due to unexpected error!)

*** 3rd question.......Is it just me or is CHKDSK useless?

Finally, as I have never had bad sectors on this hard drive, I thought I'd backup my E: drive to CDR. Fortunately, I asked Nero to SIMULATE the burn,
otherwise I'd have had another coaster!

For your info, I have 56 bad cluster on my E: drive. An IT guy i spoke to here suggested I replace the hard drive. This is fine, but how do I retrieve data?

Any help is appreciated.

Many Thks in advance,

Chandwpl
