Spybot S&D Question
by katiebug57 - 3/4/06 9:04 AM
Most of the time when I download updates, I get a red "x" through the download icon and this:
Anyone tell me what that means and why I'm getting it?

when you open SpyBot and click on 'search for updates' you will have a new screen open.
If you look on the top right you will see a name like 'see cure Europe'.
to the right of this you will find a little arrow which on clicking will give you a choice of 7 d/l sites.
in the case of a 'bad check sum' you will have to start the 'search for updates' process again and then change the d/l site on the right to something different from what you were using.
More often than not, the sites are busy so you may need to go to a different site or wait a bit and re-try.
Thanks for the response. You're great!
So, it's just that a bunch of others are using the same d/l site as myself at that particular time, and that's why the bad scum thing is coming up?
As a point of curiosity - why does it say "see cure Europe"? I've always ignored that because I'm in the States . . . or perhaps I really haven't the foggiest notion what I'm talking about, which is most likely the case!
they used to have a d/l site
in the US.
but these things called servers cost money.
I think the d/l sites are mostly in Europe because that is where they have the greatest support.
For the record I am Canadian and it bothers me too, that I have to go 'across the pond' to get a software update.
And yes, a 'bad checksum' is another way of saying, 'site busy, come back later', or try another link.
This is common in very busy sites.
(NT) (NT) Very interesting, thanks.
Why does it bother you Dawille?
In Europe we have to visit the US all the time for Windows and Office updates.
No problem with me,
May be traffic jam on the server.
Try selecting a different server from the server drop down menu.
if you search the Virus & Security Alerts forum you will find this is common. Once an update is announced everyone tries to download at once, causing this issue. Try selecting a different download site from the drop down box. This usually cures the problem for me. I also found my PC would download fromn a site while my wife's slower machine would not.
I had the same problem many times and realized that probably the download sites are overloaded. Then, I've found a fast and sure solution: direct download of the update file from Spybot's site.
On the main window, go to Help, then Home page - it will take you to Spybot's home. Look for Downloads and there for a file named "spybotsd_includes.exe."
Download it anywhere on your computer and just run it - it will find and update your Spybot. Then you may safely delete the file and that's it.
I have had this happen many times. I find that if I choose to update only one file at the time it works fine.
KatieBug I get that all the time, here's your answer!
I have dial-up and I think this might actually pertain to the sever over load, but I'm not sure so don't quote me.But on the other hand I get the dumb message all the time.Usually when I click search for updates I give it some time, even if it shows that it found items. Then I click to download. If I get the !!!bad checksum!! then I just click to search again and then download. It's annoying some times, but it really only takes me 2 times most of the time, like I said if you give it some time (even if it found something durring the searching process) then when you click to download you'll be ok. I have dial up so I've learned to be patient...oh and if you do other web surfing and downling at the same time as trying to get spybot updates it might screw it up all the time, try only doing the spybot updates, no surfing or downling except spybot stuff. Good luck, safe surfing,
Having problems updating Spybot S&D?
This happens to me from time to time. There appears to be no rime or reason behind it, other then the UPDATE site is unreachable.
From the UPDATE screen, just to the right of "search for updates" and to the left of "download updates" is a drop down arrow box to select the default update site.
Simply click on the Dropdown arrow and select a different update site before attempting another "search for updates" or "Download updates".
If you can't download updates from your newly selected update site, just select another one until you find one (there are 5 to choose from) that works.
Can't download spybot updates
I've had the same problem, but I discovered that if you try several times at different times, it will eventually download. I think the problem is that the server is overloaded a lot of the time, and you have try downloading a time when it isn't overloaded.
had the same thing both at work and home
The IT guys at work completely reinstalled Spybot and I did the same at home. No more bad checksum errors when I update(for now).
I have this problem but only with servers in the U.S.. So now I only download updates from Europe, usually Safer Networking. Never fails.
Suddenly none of the computers in the house would update Spybot. It looks like a versioning issue. Solution was bothersome but seems to work.
1. Download the latest complete version of S&D to your hard drive. DO NOT INSTALL.
2. Uninstall the old version.
3. Install the new version (1.4)
Difficulty in updating should be over.
Sybot updates won't load
I had the same problem. The cure was simple.
Try turning off the Windows firewall. If you use Zone Alarm instead of Windows, as I do, then Turn It OFF. Shut it down from the task bar.
Note: - do this as soon as you boot to your desktop. Shutdown ZA, then try updating SpyBot. Then load ZA again.
(For some reason if you wait it sometimes won't work, even if you shut down ZA). Yes there is a slight risk for a few moments while you run without the firewall!
An alternative would be to NOT load ZA on boot, Update Spybot, then load ZA.
This works fine for me. Hope it helps.
We've had the product installed since it first appeared.
We have no problem with application conflicts such as anti-virus and Zone Alarm. Depending on how you set up your anti-virus and ZA firewall, you should not have to turn them off.
Bad checksum errors in our experience are most often the result of an outdated product or downloaded from a non-domestic source. Check to ensure you have the newest version and that you have downloaded the version in your language as not all downloads are the same. MajorGeeks.com is usually the best source for U.S. downloads.
If your software is current and anti-virus/firewalls are not the issue it may be communications if you have dial-up. Downloading one file at a time may be the most practical solution. If the problem is their servers, they usually issue a message indicating a server problem and you should try later.
Try another download site
I ran into you problem once or twice and found that downloading from Safer Networking #1 (Europe) has worked everytime since.
Spybot update download problem
It happens occasionally, and it is usually a transmission problem with that particular download server. The solution is to use the pulldown menu and select another server.
Had the same problem but solved it.
I had not been on the Spybot web page for almost six months and when I went to check for updates I found there were six new ones a few months ago. I checked all the boxes and the download started but shortly after it stopped and each item had the red x and Checksum error. I discovered by accident that when there are multiple updates with different dates you need to check off ONLY the oldest one and download them one at a time. To be extra safe, I closed out the Spybot program after each individual download and then restarted it for the next download.
Choose Safe Networking 1 for downloads.
I have had the same problem many times at client sites and on my own systems. I found that if I choose Safe Networking 1 as the download site, it downloads all of the items needing updates without having to do it one at a time.
I have never had success with Safe Networking 3 or most of the Sea Cure sites. Safe Networking 1 is the site that the developer uses, I think, so it seems to be the best.
choose another download sight
ya this problem drove me crazier than i an normally. in between search for updates and download updates there is the download sight.click on the little down arrow and pick anothere sight.this usually works,if not try another site.i'm sure this will solve your problem.you've probably had a dozen replys by now but better to be safe than sorry..ron have fun
Got it - thanks!
A big thanks to everyone who responded to my question about SpyBot. Seems I wasn't the only one experiencing difficulties.
Found using a different dowload site worked for.
I appreciate the help.
