How can I change the color of the dot in letter " i " ?

I am a novice working on a logo for a project and would like to make a partial change in the color of a font. Specifically, I would like to have the stem of the lowercase letter " i " as one color and change the dot in the letter " i " to another color. I read somewhere to use Adobe Photoshop to do this. I have Adobe Illustrator ( free trial version for 30 days) so can this be done using Adobe Illustrator?
If so, is there a simple steb-by-step someone can walk me through to do this? Such a simple action yet, does not appear that obvious based on my initial internet search of forums and various sites. Is this an easy action to perform? I thought it would be.

Here's a list of 10 font editors. I've never had a need for something like this, but with 10 to choose from, you should be able to find what you need.

Thank you for the response. I did not think of font editors. I have downloaded trial of TypeTool 3 so I will give it a go and see if this software will help. Regards.
