Anybody Familiar With PostScript Printing?

Sorry in advance if this is confusing. I'll try to explain my situation as best I can.

My workplace is switching from printing on a Kodak printer to a Canon model, effective very soon. Most of the jobs we print pull paper from multiple trays throughout the job. On the Kodak machine, we have paper tray names defined right on the machine, and then my programs contain commands to switch trays wherever necessary.

Problem is, I can't for the life of me understand how to do the same with the Canon machine. I was given a manual containing dozens of print commands, but that only takes me so far. I tried running a job with some of these new commands but all I got was a "postscript typecheck" error, citing one of the new terms as the problem.

I'm supposed to have a contact person who understands all this, but he is perpetually unavailable, and my bosses are expecting me to be up to speed on this yesterday. Does anybody have any suggestions for me? I'm sorry if I didn't explain things so well, but it's a complex issue. If you need more info, I'll be happy to provide it.

I wrote apps that took in data, and out came postscript code to go to the printer. It's been almost 2 decades but from start to finish of that app it took me a year. Not that I worked on it everyday but it takes awhile to write code like that.

So while I have the understanding I find that many today need an answer now. Not in the next few weeks. Let Canon do the work here. Make the call, have the plastic ready.

Are there not PostScript specific printers? I think I have heard of that but I could be wrong.

I don't think my particular problem is as complex as you indicate. My understanding is that I just need to put new postscript commands into existing programs, so that the new printer can do what the old one did. My problem is I need someone to show me what I'm doing wrong, and nobody seems to be able to do this. I'm obviously missing a few steps, but so far cannot figure out what the deal is. I'm under tremendous pressure at work to get this done very soon.

There are folk that do PostScript still and Canon should have them as well.

What's wrong with paying for help?

And anytime a client tells me it should be simple, we know that's code for something else.
