AVG Allegedly Free (per CNET) Wants Money

I downloaded AVG, a supposedly free (i.e., no charge, no fee) anti-virus program ... and, right from the start, they tell me they want a fee after 29 days, on which I am now on the 6th.
And they are encouraging me, via banner-size warnings,to pay up right now--and not wait for those 29 days ...
Is it CNET custom to praise a supplier, especially touting the 'free' nature of his service, when the supplier--AVG--is apparently just another fee-for-service provider?
What gives? I go for the free anytime, being as provident-***-greedy as the next guy. Again, what gives?
