Is this a new scam out there?

by Ted de Castro - 12/13/13 11:26 AM

I figured SOMENE here MIGHT know.

I got a call from a guy with a heavy Indian accent claiming to be from Microsoft technical support - I hung up the first time. Some time later I get a call again - I couldn't understand the guy with his accent, low voice and my bad hearing and so he "switched me to his supervisor" - same voice same accent!

This guy says my computer has a problem and that things are shutting down and windows has been sending errors to MS. And to PROVE he was who he said he was he said he would tell me my computer's "license number" - his words - he asked if I knew it - of course I didn't and told him so -- and then he went ahead anyhow and rattled off my IP number ----- my INTERNAL IP number!

He said I had to let him install a "fix" on my computer and if i didn't he would shut my computer down completely.

I said - yeah right and told him I didn't know WHO he was and knowing IP didn't prove anything.

He said he COULD shut it down right now just to prove it - but wouldn't because he didn't have authorization and didn't want to get into trouble just to prove to one user that he could.

He then said that if I didn't cooperate he'd get in anyhow (where did THAT authorization come from all of a sudden?) and download all my personal data (why would MS do that?) and shut my system down.

I didn't like being threatened and hung up.

I disconnected for a while and thought about it ....

IF he could do what he said and was that determined to do it - he'd do it anyhow!!!

I think it was a scam and needed me to let his "fix" install - which would be his trojan so he could do anything and everything he threatened.

I do have an network activity monitor on my screen and IF there were access and tons of stuff being downloaded - that activity would show.
