How can I be certain I am downloading the software I want?

Hi I have a windows 7 PC. It's in pretty good shape. I just had it serviced recently and due to a microsoft update back in April and some other errors on my part it had to be restored to factory default. Which is a pain in the ass, but fine. Anyway in order to take better care of my computer I've been advised to download two programs. Malware and Belarc. As far as I understand both of these programs can be really useful. However I understand that people create viruses that mimic them. Viruses that look excaclty like the real thing when you go to download them and then of course do something else altogether.
In fact a couple years ago I downloaded a copy of malware bytes that turned out to be virus. I was able to restore to a previous configuration, but I am weary of downloading either program.
<div>I do need belarc or something similar because I have to uninstall my Sims game
(another microsoft update screw up the damned game)
and sims is good for not completely uninstalling which makes it impossible. to reinstall. Belarc would help me find in leftover registration keys or files . </div>
I want to take better care pf my PC than I did before and I want to make certain that I am using software that is safe. Any suggestions, ideas, best practices or explanations would be much appreciated thank you.
