Jack-in-the-box icon in taskbar. Virus or Script Error?

I was previously using a Dell computer using Windows XP. While in the process of saving a pdf from Microsoft Access, suddenly about 30 windows opened on my screen of various applications for no apparent reason. I was able to close all of these programs except for some Kaspersky Anti Virus windows and a window with an icon that looked like a closed jack-in-the-box. I took a screen shot of this but as I'm new this forum I'm not sure if I there is a way to post it. The box is red with a blue top and a green right side and a yellow crank. I then restarted and those icons disappeared. I don't know if I have a virus, or some kind of script error? When I clicked on the Kaspersky Anti Virus icon, across the top it says," Your computer security is at risk! Fix"
This has continued to happen despite doing virus scans and clean ups from time to time every few months.
Recently I switched to a new Dell Optiplex 3010 computer. Everything was working fine and then suddenly i was getting all kinds of printing errors. My print screens kept freezing. I restarted my computer and Kasperski popped up and the jack in the box again. Is this a virus or a script error?
