How to remove Fake FBI Virus

Running Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 4700. While surfing the Web, suddenly the computer locks up and there is an official looking FBI seal with a written and audible warning that I must send $200 somewhere or I will be arrested in 72 hours due to "illegal" computer activity.

I rebooted and tried running the "Rkill" software that I had used earlier to stop the fake 2012 Windows XP Home Edition Security virus, however, it did not stop it.

Mcafee Antivirus did not stop it, and Superantispyware scans did not remove it.

I have four profiles on the computer and it seems to be only affecting one of them. Hence, I was able to create this discussion.

Thank you, it worked! Just to be on the safe side, before I system restored, using a non-infected profile, i went into the files of the infected profile and deleted any suspicious files that were created on the day of the infection. They were relatively easy to identify, however I had to go into several folders to delete them.

The "system restore" also restored all my other settings and viewable files that were altered by the virus.

System Restore

Having the same problem (FBI virus, Dell computer running Windows XP). On startup I pressed F12 and got a System Menu with lots of options, but could not find SYSTEM RESTORE anywhere. Can someone tell me the magic key to press to bring it up? PS. When I try to run Windows in any mode (safe, normal, etc.), a blue screen pops up saying that Windows has been stopped from opening because of a problem. After that I can go no further. Thanks for any help you can give me.

FBI Ransom virus

I had the same experience (twice). Powered off, reboot, quickly opened Malwarebytes Anti-Malware which found and zapped it. McAfee AV had let it through from somewhere -- I clicked on no unknown apps. Several scans later, finally gone. Glad you recovered. I hate System Restore.
