my security essential detected a file that said it wasn't sure if it was malicious or not..
i went to the folder and scanned the two files that were in there (IDX File & File ) with my Malwarebytes's Anti-Malware and it said no malicious were detected but when i uploaded the file on virustotal.com
3 / 42 scan's believe its a java / trojan

how do i know if this is a harmful virus or not? and what kind of action do i take? thanks for the help! =]

Where did this file come from and where did your anti-virus find it, (what folder/file location)?
What is the file name?
I would normally say that where our own anti-virus and one of the 42 scanners at virustotal.com says it is infected, that would be consistent with a false positive. But where our own anti-virus scan and 3 other scanners say it is infected, I would be more cautious.
If it is quarantined then leave it there for a while, a week or so and see if there are any effects to the system or any software fails because it has been removed. If there are no bad effects after a week or so, I would say it is safe for the anti-virus scanner to delete it from quarantine.

I understand that Avira, Panda and Sophos think they found a virus.
But I don't understand how something can be 78% a jar file, 22% a zip file and 0% an image file.
Also, you're not telling about the file(s):
- what filenames?
- what folder were they in?
- how did they come there (from where did they come)?
And most important:
- do you need them or not?

Java is often used in web sites and can indeed be a way of transmitting malware, so if the web site admin is not doing anything to keep his web site clean of malware, or if he is the one who is delivering the malware, then the safest course of action is to stay away.
The contents of the Java cache can be cleared, yes.
Streaming videos is similar to downloading, the data is still downloaded to your browser otherwse there would be no video, but with streaming the data is not saved.
