Installing a new antivirus program

I have Free version of AVG and want to install a paid Norton program. Can I install Norton and then uninstall AVG AFTER or which is the correct order; "the chicken or the egg?" lol Most people say that a person is just lucky and taking a chance by using a FREE version of any antivirus program , and protection isn't as good as the paid version programs. I have used AVG for several years. and with all of my programs, I always make sure they are updated before any scans. I'm aware of the basics. but its quite confusing on the different opinions. thanks

There are some out there that feel they are leaving their machine unprotected during the step but I'll ask this.

How did you protect the machine on a fresh OS install since the OS didn't have an antivirus built in?

Thanks for the info. My laptop is a Toshiba 64-bit Satalite WIN 7. Got it a year ago, but Norton was installed on it then. I used the uninstall tool for that when I installed AVG. We installed a new Norton antivirus from Staples on the new Gateway WIN 7 computer. so they said its safer to have a paid program for virus. There can be 3 machines installed on the same disk. thanks

Norton and other titles have not stopped many exploits. So is the statement that paid is better than free.

What really matters is the user. They tend to create the issue and so far, not one of these protection suites have stopped the user from installing malware and more.
