Java version test indicates Java not installed in Firefox 12

even though add-on list shows Java Console 6.0.32 listed as "enabled". The message says: "No working Java was detected on your system."

I installed both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Java 6 update 32. Java test for IE9 shows the latest Java version is installed. Both the x32 and x64 versions are listed in the control panel under "Programs and Features", but the Java tester does not detect Java in the Firefox 12 browser.

OS is Windows 7 Home Premium X64, browser versions IE9 and Firefox 12.

Did you check Java's Control Panel?

Harv..

Are you sure Mozilla is checked in Java's Control Panel? Open Java's Control Panel (in Windows CP). Double-click on the icon and select the Advanced Tab.

When clicking the + sign next to "Default Java for Browsers", you should have Mozilla checked. Do you?

Additionally, which test did you use? There are various testing sites. Some of which are known to have problems.

Forgot to ask. Did you restart FF after installing Java?

I know it doesn't make any sense, but ...... I thought I'd ask anyway. happy

Here is an easy way to check your plugins: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/

Mozilla has said that java was disabled for user safety on prior visits. Because of that, I do not have java installed at the moment. Waiting until Sun gets it sorted out before I install this plug-in again; notably high number of website server attacks center on java exploits, sometimes resulting in visitors becoming infected when visiting a good url has been reported.

AFAIK Mozilla was only disabling older versions ..

As far as I know, Mozilla was only disabling older versions of the Deployment Toolkit. But that was 2 years ago. It was done, in an attempt to block attacks which were occurring at the time.. IF it was disabled the user received a prompt notifying them there was a security issue. I'm unaware of Mozilla doing it without the same sort of warning. (Here is where it was being discussed at the time)

Do you know if Mozilla has (recently) started disabling it again? And if so, without the warning?

I'm aware of the of the plugin check. Since Harv only mentioned Java wasn't detected on his system, I didn't think to suggest checking the plugin. Maybe he should try it to see if it's the cause of his problem. confused .

I still have Java installed. I don't know if the same is recommended for all users, but I feel comfortable (and safe) with it installed.

Shows Up Fine On XP With Firefox 12

Unfortunately, I don't have a Windows 7 computer here to test but running the newest Java 6 Update 32 on Firefox 12 and Internet Explorer 8 shows correctly when testing at the site below as well as the plugin site mentioned by mchainmchain in his post above.:

Harv, I used the same site as Grif. If you want to test it at another site, try the one below.

IF you have NoScript installed, you will have to "temporarily allow the page" prior to running the test.

when I went back to verify it was still there.

Also NoScript does not indicate it is blocking the Java test site, i.e., no red S with a slash mark. When I click on the Java test site, Firefox browser opens up a new window to "What Version of Java are You Using?" There's a notation at the top of the page "Additional plugins are required to display all the media on this page. Install Missing Plugins". When I click on "Install Missing Plugins", it opens a new window to "Plugin finder service" with Java Runtime Environment 1.6u29 checked. This is an old version of Java. Anyway, when I tried to install it, it failed.

Found A Win7 Computer & It Works Fine, So Have You Tried?

Please try starting from scratch by first uninstalling all versions of Java from the Control Panel/Programs and Features section.. Once that's done, uninstall Firefox as well..

Next, download the "Java Ra" version from the link below and run it.. It will remove all remnants of Java that might remain on the computer. (Use the JavaRa 2.0 Beta #3 which works best for 64 bit versions of Windows)

Now download the manual installer file for Firefox 12 from the Mozilla website and run it to install Firefox 12.

Now, if you haven't download the 32 bit AND 64 bit versions of Java 6 Update 32 from the Oracle website below and install them by installing the 64 bit version first, then the 32 bit version.

According to Firefox 12, 6 > 7.

Firefox 12 doesn't know Java 7. It thinks Java 6 Update 32 is the latest and 7 is "outdated" so it disables it. How stupid is that?

It's a classic programming error where the code isn't correctly written to test for a specific version or higher/later. I've seen this many times in programs looking for a *specific version* of DirectX (9.0 is fine but 9.0c is not '9.0 or later') and other components and additions to Windows.

Until Mozilla fixes that goof you'll need Java 7 and 6 installed to have Java in all your browsers.
