bob b already answered your question, "How do I locate what anti-virus, firewalls, etc.that are already installed".

Prior to installing a new Anti-Virus, it would be wise to use an uninstall utility to remove that which came with your new desktop. Most vendors provide them. See this list of Security Software Uninstallers. This may also help.

Some FREE and safe Anti-Virus software, which many of our members use:

• Avira's AntiVir
• Avast
• AVG
• Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) - Should you select MSE see: "Checklist for installing Microsoft Security Essentials"

A couple of Free Anti-Spyware programs to consider as stand-alone scanners:

• Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and/or SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition
