I received the following email:

When more than one person is involved, we may need to confirm the name and address of each of you. If we are unable to verify your identity electronically, we will ask you to provide some original documents containing your name and address. When applying online you will be told during the identification process which options are available to you. For your protection, transactions on your account may be limited until you are able to confirm your identity. We realize that this precaution may cause you some inconvenience; however keeping your account safe is one of our top priorities. Thank you for being our customer. Sincerely, Christopher J. The part that I underlined about calling the phone number on the back of the debit card confused me. Everything else smelled of "phish". From the beginning I felt that this was a Phishing scam because I do not have an account with Chase, but if I had had an account I might have been tempted to call the number. So what do you think?

definitely a scam. That's the whole point of phishing, these scammers send this type of email to the by the masses--and fish for those who actually have a Chase account in hopes to catch those who are off guard.
In addition to Ed's advice... most banks/credit card companies standard practice nowadays is to always greet you by your full name when they send emails like these to you--not a generic "Dear customer". Also if the bank detects unusual activity on your account, they will immediately call you directly, and rarely email you for this type of stuff.

Right or Wrong.....
As long as the number continues to remain in question, I would still recommend calling the number on the back of the card, or the bank directly. Just as you did. It eliminates the guesswork.
