winmgmt.exe

I noticed winmgmt.exe among running app's on my system. Unsure what it is I Googled it and read at http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/winmgmt.exe.html that it is located in the c:\windows\System32 folder. And that "In other cases, winmgmt.exe is a virus, spyware, trojan or worm!"

The winmgmt.exe file on my system is located at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WBEM (and on a backup drive at D:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WBEM). WINMGMTR.DLL, WinMgmt.log, and $WinMgmt.CFG are located with it. It does not seem to be loacted at c:\windows\System32 or d:\windows\System32.

I am still unsure just what it does or if it is a virus or pest. Could some one out there please advise me just what the deal is here?

I am using Windows ME on a Gateway 800. NAV and Spybot S&D report no problems.

winmgmt.exe is about half way down the page on this link in addition the Microsoft article that Viper provided.
