I checked mine out and found that all the information on me was public record and, in fact, the site had quite a few mistakes. While it had several pictures, none of them were me and it has me listed by my nickname and not my given name. So, for now at least, I'm not going to worry about it.

Looked up myself and my girlfriend and 50% of the information was completely wrong. I found it amusing it was so wrong. Anyone sucker enough to pay for more information deserves what they get.

My advice is, when required to fill out a form with information requested that isn't needed, be random with your answers (be older, be younger, make up addresses, change gender(I won't tell), Emails are free, collect a bunch and use them on forms. In time the databases will be worthless.

It is data that is misused by government like this why so many people will not answer the census, vote and use p.o. boxes to do taxes and bills. This is terrifying. On the other hand, I tried everyone in my family and no one shows up.

I'm guessing that this (as yet) is only for residents of the USA. I tried it for several people in the UK, including an ex Mayor, and got absolutely nothing.

So... I Googled - used car dealers, USA - got an email address, and Bingo....

I ran a few names and some gave correct info and some did not. I did not set up access to look further, but it was interesting that they had one friend's race wrong.

That's why, from the very beginning, I've used a pseudonym and an address that only exists in my mind--and I move around a lot. The only time I give out any personal info is when I order something online; and I only order from companies that already have my personal info.

Even before "identity theft" was a problem, many of us saw the potential for such theft and took precautions. It's the reason for using pseudonyms ("screen names"), passwords, secure connections, etc. in the first place.

In Europe, where I live, there is a big issue on the use of private data stored in public services' archives by a third party. By law, all State authorities do NOT disclose a citizen's private information to a third person without his/her written authorisation. These laws also apply to the private sector, though it is more difficult to uphold them effectively.

Lack or inadequacy of such legislation in the U.S. should concern every American citizen. You should set a limit on the manipulation of your private information.

Nope. The question marks are most likely because the person is using a Mac computer.There are interpretation issues with the Mac's use of certain languages. Being a Mac, they have to be different and the website can't interpret some of the characters because it is based on the other 99% of computer users.

You certainly have a point but I'm afraid it is a case of "not only but also...."

There is a lot of information about my Mother who is over 90. Her only use of the web is via MSNTV and that only since the age of 86. It is not much use for web brousing and she doesn't cope with web ordering. I think she only orders her meds and email and that's it. So I know she hasn't personally entereed all this information on the web herself.

As has been said it collects information that is in the public domain and many of us have no control over who else might be making that information available.

You can look up my dead father's SSN on the web if you want....and I know he didn't put it there.

I looked up my information on this website and I can state that 90% of what is listed is not only inaccurate but a complete lie. I began a fight five years ago with two different collection agencies that were attempting to collect a debt from me that was not mine. They (as stated in court) "Confused me with another person with a similar name". This just goes to prove that Spokeo's did not research anything and will soon be hearing from my lawyer to clean up their slanderous statements about me. Web sites like this one are liable for their content!

LMAO.. and I wish they hadn't accused me of being a Democrat. My info was so totally wrong. I get phones calls for people with the same name as me and I can tell they are bill collectors (I used to be a bill collector so I like to give them the run around and screw with them... hey, if they call me by mistake, I'm sending them to Bumfock Egypt) The only info they have correct for me is part of my name, so now I'm tempted to send them some info that is really bogus... like... my house value is a couple of million, my income is a billion, my religion is Muslim, I'm a liberal, I voted for Obama, my family is the Rockefellers, my hobbies are hiding bombs under my Burka, and I drive a Hummer. Wonder if they'd except the info... LOL
