Windows security updates Fail To Install ! (Since 4/2010)

TECHNICAL INFO:

Windows XP Pro(SP3)
Intel Core 2 Duo T4400
2 Gig Memory
IE8
Word 2003
Dell Inspiron E1505 Laptop
Microsoft Security Essentials


PROBLEM:

Dear IT Experts,
I'm not very computer savvy.
I contacted MSN 3 times for help - with No response !
Can one of you technical gurus help me figure out how to get my computer to SUCCESSFULLY Install Windows security updates. I've tried installing directly from their site, automatically and manually - without Any success.
I Already was hacked (right around the time the security updates stopped installing)- and am trying to prevent another, similar nightmare.

Some like we discuss at http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6142_102-0.html?messageID=3323575&tag=mncol;lst;1#3323575 are pushing owners to the limit of their skills.

I fear that for some folk they have to take it to a counter to get it done.

I have Windows Prosessional Office 2003

To get my updates for it takes about three times around - that after I install all the other updates first, The most importent one is migration 3.1 installer. Darrell
