What is the best Free virus removal/spyware removal program?

I use windows vista 32-bit. It doesnt have to be one program. if the best spyware removal is 1 program and the virus removal another thats fine. Thanks for your help. I'm new to this.

This is what I use:

Anti-virus: Avira

Anti-spy: Malwarebytes, Windows defender, Spywareblaster (note it is not a remover but a spyware preventer and has no scan option).

Others I recommend today:

Anti-virus: AVG, Avast, Microsoft Security Essentials

Anti-spyware: SuperAntiSpyware Free Edition.


please note I am listing them in the category I found these programs on download.com. Some anti-virus can catch some spyware. However you should have a dedicated anti-spyware program.

I would have recommend Spybot S+D and Ad-Aware a few year back.

Spybot updates only once a week. Normally on Wednesday. New Spyware is always appearing every minute of every day.

Ad-Aware scans are slow also has detected many trusted clean downloads as malware (false positives). So for these reasons I am no longer recommending them.

If you want free application - Avira an Microsoft Security Essentials are the best. In Vista and 7 in cooperation with standard Windows Defender and different security features Microsoft Security Essentials seems to me be more than enough for a regular user.

Among non-free applications Kaspersky seem to be bit better than Norton and Mcafee if we are talking about leaders.
