Download MalAware from http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/malaware/
It's only a scanner. If it found infection, proceed to downloading A-squared Free: http://download.cnet.com/A-squared-Free/3000-2239_4-10262215.html
Allow it to run a 'deep scan' and then quarantine what it finds.
Or
Malwarebytes Antimalware (MBAM) http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
SUPERAntispyware (SAS) http://download.cnet.com/SuperAntiSpyware-Free-Edition/3000-8022_4-10523889.html
If the problem continues, proceed by trying the tools below:
Win32/Olmarik Removal tool: http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN2372
TDSSKiller: http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684
See if the above tools will find and fix any.

a-squared and TdSS killer both found something. it was a-squared that got rid of the google hijack problem though. Thank you so much for your info

I reformatted my disk. I did try using the above tools but they didn't help 
Now i have better antivirus programs running and i hope it doesn't happen again.

I haven't heard one peep from Google about this problem. One would think they would express concern and suggestions about their searches being hijacked!?
I'm about ready to dump the Google search all together.
Oh also: this redirection occurs ONLY with the toolbars and NOT with the main page. So go directly to http://www.google.com and see the difference.
Worried about virus carry-over

Hi Donna,
I used your helpful reply to remove a similar virus on my computer. The SUPERAntispyware (SAS) was the one that did the trick for me.
Incidentally, unrelated to the virus, I have been planning to replace my computer with a new one in the next few months. I have copied all my files (mainly pictures, audio, Word files, etc.) to an external hard-drive. I am worried that when I plug in my external hard-drive into my new computer, I will transfer over some remnant of the virus. Is this a legitimate concern? Is there anything I can do to safeguard against it?

I suggest to have trustworthy antivirus running and configure to scan all files, including USB/External drives... before you will plug-in the hard-drive or any flash/USB drive. Also, ensure that you have the latest updates from Microsoft's Windows Update.

I have been trying to fix the same problem - Google redirecting to random pages, but I couldn't install most of the spyware scanning software. The DNS addresses had been fixed, which are resolving domain names to incorrect sites.
For me, this isn't a Google Hijack - it's a network settings hijack.

Other users have TDSSKiller to help them while others have to use Hitman Pro trial software. Some have to use mix tools to get rid of the Google redirect hijack issues. It all depends on the variant of the malware that were installed on the system.
One thing is for sure: it does hijack the internet connection settings but it there's a trojan/rootkit that needs to be "removed".
Fixing network or dns settings is only a work-around but the rootkit/trojans remains unless the tools or other scanners in this topic says it's clean.
