Spyware, viruses, & security forum: What Happened to Ad-Aware?

When I first installed Ad-Aware and clicked YES, I noticed that the Automatic Update was off. At first I thought I got a virus or something, so I uninstalled and reinstalled. I've experienced none of the effects after this, although I still receive the "save changes" pop up box the same way.

One of the best detection and cleaning rates around, free or paid.I have no idea why somebody would elect not to use it, and use AdAware instead. AdAware lost me for good with the 2007 version. Too many bugs, no forum help, quite a few FP's, for which forum help is usually necessary,and the service uses a heap of resource. Interface does look slick, though, if the user likes eye candy.

I've been using Norton 360 as my security suite. I only pick Ad-Aware as a secondary scanner in case Norton never really catch anything, together with Spybot.

You may call me crazy, but this is how I feel secure. Thanks anyway, for the suggestion to switch Ad-Aware 2007 versions.

This is the first time I actually received such an error, so I'm asking of opinion of what actually happened.

I just used Ad-Aware 2007 today to scan (Full Scan), and I was notified that "Ad-Aware service had an unexpected error and needs to be closed", after which the scan "hangs" for a while before a scan result appear. (Take note that the error occurs when the scan reaches the "Scan for cookies" stage).

I uninstalled and reinstalled Ad-Aware using the similar setup file I used to install the 7.0.2.3 version before, and the same problem persists.

I had Ad-Aware to scan at startup, and I receive the same errors each time I log into Windows. After a few boots, this Ad-Aware window appear:

I scanned with Spybot 1.5.1 and Norton 360, but nothing is found. (Note: Adware.SystemProcess and Tracking Cookies are the only things found in my laptop by Norton 360 until about a few days before this happens.) I suspect it has got to be a bug in Ad-Aware 2007.

I'm trying to get AVG Anti-Rootkit Free to check if there's anything suspicious. If the problem persist I may have to use my created Recovery disk (used ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery to create the recovery disk before even installing Norton 360 and other stuff.)

Hope to get some replies soon.

Problem is still occurring with Ad-Aware, so I'll drop it for some time. I've just reformatted my laptop (using another of my computer to type this reply), so I can set up everything again.

What I plan is to keep Spybot while getting SUPERantispyware and Spyware Terminator to settle problems in my thumb drives, and scan individual files.

Anyway, am using SUPERantispyware on this computer of mine to scan if there's anything malicious inside my thumb drive. I've just been told that all nearby printing shops and computer centres from my school are all infected with a virus.

I already have Norton 360, so everything basically will be secondary scanners, whether ST or SAS. As I said ST will basically help me in scanning individual files I've downloaded, and SAS will help me scan for anything in thumb drives or hard drives.

Although SAS can't really do much about viruses. I only have to run a Norton 360 FULL SCAN (argh! Why can't it have a thumb drive and file scanner???) when I have the time to really get rid of one.
