Norton virus problem

I hopeing someone can point me in the right direction. I have a compaq PC with windows xp I bought in 2002. It came with norton antivirus protection 2002 and I wanted to try Microsoft's antivitus protection so I went to the microsoft site and as as per their instructions to try a sample version of their software, I uninstalled norton. After I tried to download the Microsoft software (never got it to download successfully) strange things then started to happen to my PC. I then reinstalled norton from the backup CD and even stranger things started to happen. Now my PC locks up with several msssages from the norton software " norton antivirus has detected a virus on your PC", "norton antivirus has detected a trojan on your PC" and then "norton antivirus is scanning your email" The last message happens over and over very rapidly and locks up my PC.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to solve this problem?
