mcafee update causes virus scanner to stop working?

I ran into a problem where I installed the updates from McAfee last year and as a result my anti-virus stopped working. Windows 2000 machine that has been running McAfee for the last 3 years.

I cleaned out the installation and attempted to re-install. The software says it doesn't support my operating system. Anybody run into this problem?

Their helpdesk is worthless. You essentially wait an hour to be told to uninstall and re-install and call back and wait another hour if that doesn't work. Then they ask you to run a full diagnostics on your machine where they capture every bit of information on your computer and then send it via email to their unsecure mailbox. I checked the files that their tool pulled from my machine and it showed the names and directories of all my files including settings and configuration of everything within the registry. Thanks but I don't think McAfee needs to know the directory locations and filenames of my financial data. I love how a security company uses unsecured email transactions in order to send/recieve their customers data. End of helpdesk relationship at that point. I will send some of the files but not everything so their excuse is that I am uncooperative so I can't be helped.

My yearly contract is about up so I'm not renewing, but I'm annoyed enough that I might report this problem to some scummy lawyer to rattle their cage. I paid for a product that suddenly stops working and the only response I get is that its my problem.

Please provide us the EXACT version of McAfee you are running.. McAfee makes lots of products so is it VirusScan alone?, their Security Suite?, their firewall? I also need the exact version name and number. If you've got it installed, RIGHT click on the McAfee shield, or the red "M" in the lower right corner, choose "VirusScan", then "About". Which "ScanEngine" number does it say? Which virus definitions number?

Are you getting any error messages when you attempt to install/uninstall? If so, give me the EXACT messages please.

Thats the message I get now. This is just their virusscan product. I downloaded the software clicking on the McAfee shield for the weekly update. I think the exec file is called DM.exe? Anyway, the upgrade failed and I was told to uninstall everything McAfee and attempt to run the installation again. I uninstalled everything and attempted to run the installation software. I got that message.

I'd like to provide the version number of the DM app but it doesn't provide that. I could submit the file date and size.

can still not run the DMSetup.exe program. I keep
getting the message

"You cannot download these McAfee programs because
your operating system is not supported."

I have had a subscription to McAfee for 2+ years on this computer running Windows 2000 server and there have been no changes to the operating system for the past 3+ years.

Ah, Windows 2000 SERVER....

It would be a lot clearer IF you could tell me the specific version of VirusScan you're trying to install but if it's any of the recent retail online versions, VS 8, 9, 10, or 11, the Windows 2000 Server operating system IS NOT supported. Windows 2000 Pro, YES, but not the SERVER.

Sure, we've seen the retail versions can install on some Windows 2000 Server machines occasionally and work fine for a while but eventually, for most people, it fails.. Sorry, but that's the way it is.. We see it a lot on the McAfee forums. The retail versions weren't designed for servers.

Your best bet for the Server, IF you're going to continue using McAfee, is to use the corporate, VirusScan Enterprise software. It's specifically designed for that purpose.

Thanks. I figured it was something like that, but I don't understand how it would be working fine for 2+ years and then suddenly it stops working. I'm guessing most likely their patch caused the problem. Its a bit irritating.

I probably should just upgrade to the retail version of the Windows XP since my original intention for the box no longer applies.

I think it was AOL 4.0, 5.0 or 7.0 when it had 9.0 out and I got the same message. I had too many problems with 9.0 and McAfee said it would support AOL. Obviously, if it was AOL 9.0!! Darrell L.

Its like salt rubbed onto an open wound. I thought I was done with these guys and I just got a renewal notice. In order to cancel the subscription they make you contact their helpdesk to go through their sales spill before giving you a long distance number where you are put on hold for another 10 minutes before getting another sales rep....................AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Annual charges are typical and sometimes hard to stop.
