remnants of the old one first. Uninstall everything from add/remove progams including Live Update. Also make sure there is nothing in the control panel for Norton/Symantec. Then download and run this tool from Symantec, Make SURE you read the directions. Once that is all done, insert your new disc and follow the prompts.

I'm using NIS 2007 and have tried removing it using Add/Remove Programs twice already to see how it will do its job in removing itself. So far, no problem.

You can try to run the Norton Removal Tool that Roddy posted earlier since your Norton failed to uninstall some old stuff. When all is done, restart then install NIS 2007 again. That is if you haven't get another security suite.

There is maybe an application in your computer that blocks uninstallation of Norton product with the use of Norton Removal Tool (same link provided by Roddy in his post).

Try to end the processes used by Norton then try to uninstall again using Add/Remove Programs or the said Removal Tool.

If there is an option in NIS to protect itself. I saw it happened before. When I tried to uninstall NIS, it won't remove until I "uncheck" protection to Norton product. This is a security feature in NIS (I think) that will prevent malware in uninstalling/disabling the product.

I'm guessing the security thing that needs to be unchecked that protects Norton is on one of the configure screens?

The box to check is within Norton? The problem with this computer is Norton IS 2007 won't open, won't activate, won't update, won't do anything including be deleted or uninstalled.

I am in a similar situation as yours. The difference being, I have not yet installed NIS 2007 over NIS 2005 which came along with my computer. I use a Sony Vaio VGN S56GP with 1 GB RAM, and run the same softwares as mentionend by you. I have already purchased NIS 2007 and am rethinking on using it. Someone suggested ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 7 to me.

What solution did you come up with your problem?

Off late, I have read in a number of forums that NIS slows down the computer's performance unless you have a high capacity RAM. I am using 1 GB RAM and yet the start up takes upto 4-5 mins. I have checked the start menu and removed loading of un necessary programs but still it is taking that long. I dont know if it is due to NIS or something else. I run AOL Spyware zapper, Spybot S&D, CCleaner and Adware atleast once a week. Yesterday, after I got an outbreak alert from Symantec about the Trojan Peacomm, I updated the definitions using live update but still the warning kept popping up. I will however give NIS 2007 a last try and if it doesn't work out, I will go for ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 2007. BTW, can anyone tell me if ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 2007 is compatible with NIS 2007 or they do conflict?

I have been happy with NIS 2005 and accepted the following because I have seen the same errors in two computers I take care of......am curious, however, how NIS 2007 behaves.

In NIS 2007:

Do you have any conflict with Ad-aware or SpyBot?

Do you see Live Update errors in Event Viewer/Applications?

... or unauthorized access errors in NIS 2007 Log file for system32\winlogon.exe, msiexec.exe, or Ad-aware?

I have recently installed NIS 2007 after a clean removal of NIS 2005. Haven't had a problem so far. No problems whatsoever while installing NIS 2007 may be because I completely erased all traces on NIS 2005 including the registry entries before installing NIS 2007.

1. While installing NIS 2007, you do get a message that it is not compatible with Spybot S&D and you will have to uninstall Spybot before procedding with the installation of NIS 2007. There is no conflict with Adaware. After installing NIS 2007, I have reinstalled Spybot S&D and its running fine.

2. There was no such error message. May be you still have traces of earlier version of NIS left in your computer. Steps I did for a complete uninstall are:
a) Uninstall NIS (incl live update and live reg) using Add-Remove from Control Panel.
b) Uninstall using the Norton removal tool from Symantec website. (Link posted in this thread)
c) Manually search "Symantec" on your computer and delete all.
d) Run HJT (Hijack This) and read carefully through the logfile and "fix" any entry with "Symantec" on it.
Re-start your computer after a,b and d, and you are done with uninstallation.

Version I have is 10.0.0.86. I dont think this is the most recent one. But Spybot is running fine now, after re-installing.
