Spyware, viruses, & security forum: Running 2 AntiVirus programs ... A tip.

Although it is not recommended that a person has more than 1 anti-virus program running at the same time, some people like to have the sense of security that a second AV program may provide.

The solution that I've been using for the past few months, in addition to my AVG running real-time protection on my machine, has been to also install ClamWin Free Antivirus.

ClamWin Free Antivirus does not include an on-access real-time scanner, so you need to manually scan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware.

After installing this program, it places a small icon in your system tray that allows you complete control of the program, enables automatic daily updating, and scheduled scanning. The program also integrates with the Windows Explorer context menu, allowing manual scanning of downloads, and other files/folders.

Manual scans that I've run, appear to be very thorough and can take a long time depending on how many files you have to scan. The only problem that I've found is a false positive on the database for the Panda Activescan on-line scanner, (as does Avast antivirus). Note that this may also be true if you are running Panda AV as your primary real-time anti-virus program.
