I've had the free version(s)of ZA for 4 years, with no problems. Now it's true you don't get that much info from the free version, but enough to Google the Filename and make an educated decision on an unknown program trying to access your PC. From what I've read, it sems the free ZA might be better in certain respects than the ZA Pro.

Free version and works perfectly for me. I suggest downloading to disk and then uninstalling the old version then do a clean install (not update). Some have had problems in going from Ver 5 to Ver 6 and I think this was the issue. No problem for me doing this way and gave me an opportunity to clean up Programs under "Program Control" by removing a lot of junk and starting with a clean slate.

I have been using the free version of ZA for almost a year now and have not had any problems with it or its upgrades. I was reluctant to upgrade to ZA Pro when the free version works so well and now I am glad I didn't do so.

I too updated ZoneAlarm, but my system crashed and wouldn't completely boot. Luckily I had taken a full backup with Acronis and restored with little effort. Before I do a complete install, I'd like to hear from others that this method is safe. For those don't have a backup utility, this should be a warning to put something in place and not just for data. New releases have bitten me in the past and I swore I'd never go thru the manual method of doing a complete system install and add/tweak each individual application afterward. Small investment for $50.

I agree that the free one is better ~ aside from the popup notice every few minutes the update seems okay...just for fun I have started jotting down the address numbers so I can check them out and see if they are legit...so far they are not...

I needed to use a restore point - The new update cripples your computer.

You would think such an update would be thoroughly tested first before stuffing up peoples machines

I have imported the free ZoneAlarm Anti-virus Software as a download. DO NOT DO THIS, under any circumstances. You will get "much more than the software"! You will get "fishered in viruses, malware, and incroachment into your hard drive sections which operate your computer. The viruses imbedd into the operation section of the registry, you must manually get rid of the malware then.

MY Pc is now ok , but I was concerned at first when I started getting all these warnings . After a bit of fiddling with permissions I was just left with pop ups out of control but I discovered that running two pop up/ ad blockers ,ZA anD NTLGuard was causing a conflict and allowing pop ups . I switched off NTL Guard popup and all is ok .I think this is a bit like running two Virus programmes ,bad news and probably true of all the security programmes as they obviously check each other . Basic maths ,two negatives equal a positive .
Please check my post on NTL Broadband Medic as ZA help to stop what I believe is some unauthorized listening , but I'm no Tecchy and probably just paranoid .
Seriously I believe that when these disasters happen it is almost always down to the other programmes you have on your PC . I have discovered over the last year that the freebies generally are the best ,but i won't compromise on Firewall .ZA upgrade is ok on my set up so it can't have a general problem otherwise all users would experince these didasters

I updated free version and experienced lots of alerts. when some programs or applications try to start a service or other executable, ZA warns you. If you know the program is legit, check the allways allow checkbox and click the allow button. You won't be bothered again by that app. If you click the deny button, something may not work. Just experiment and find out what is best. If it's a progaam I never heard of I click deny first to get an idea of whats going on. So far these have all been spyware-scumware stuff, which I clean out regularly anyway.

Absolutely , I was asked if I wanted to upgrade to the new version and did the download . I was alarmed at first to see the new style warnings but after a bit of learning on my part everything was ok . I still get the dangerous behaviour warnings which are a bit alalrming but if you take the time to think about them then they make sense . The anti spy I believe to be better than the rest although it runs a scan at times other than my schedule , which is no more than unusual.
Ps I was on the pro version which I paid for .

I had no trouble with old version. Now I have to shut it down to see my Earthlihk mail and other programs. All I get is error code 8073 and program will not open. The new version is a piece of crap

I am running too AVG7 , ZAlarm ,Adware ,Spybot and Spyware Doctor.
When I tried to run Microsoft Antispyware (Beta1) found out that it is in conflict with

Spyware Doctor.My system crawled until finally it hanged up and I had to close down

and restart manually.
But the system did not respond and went into safe mode advising that is seriously

damaged and that I had to recover my files from the back up . I was lucky to retreive and

reboot.
Then I uninstalled Microsoft Antispyware, and everything back to normal again.
Therefore I advise you to get rid of MS Antispware (Beta1) as soon as possible.
Try to intall Spyware Doctor free version from PC Pitstop Tools., and run a system scan to

fix infections. To my opinion is the best.
In the past I was also infected twice by Trojan Horse virus , but AVG7 spotted and wiped

it out.
