Minstrelsy was nothing more than better organized busking and done to earn money for performers desperate for work. It wasn't done for the purpose of mocking or making fun of anyone but neither was it meant to be a reality or educational production. Exaggeration is a part of theater and always has been. No one actually talks and behaves like actors on stage. So now these performers are to be hated?

We recently had a post here with a link to some WWE promotion with two guys using hyperbole to advertize an upcoming wrestling contest by trying to make it grudge match between a patriot and an illegal immigrant...thus a political hot topic that divides us right now. Some folks, including well known talk show hosts, waded in to protest and vilify the act as not properly representing any legitimate side of the debate. These folks had the media turn tables on them as not being able to separate reality from entertainment. When I saw the how the man's makeup in the OP link was compared to minstrel makeup and demonized for such, I though immediately of how people can use the same or similar arguments to support or reject either side of an issue. In the case of the WWE ad, however, the desire was to create anger in order to draw a crowd to the fight. It was not entertainment, IMO, and is worthy of being demonized. Minstrelsy goes back at least as far as old mummers street plays and was designed to be entertaining and amusing. It wasn't designed to fill streets and play houses with angry people.

Had the gentleman's costume and mannerisms been something grotesque, exaggerated and mocking of black athletes it would have been different. I wasn't at the party but the picture shown was, as I mentioned, a respectful image. It was not...and excuse the comparison...like this one of Dennis Rodman at his finest. That would have been over the top.

Bottom line is this. If I was a protestant politician and put on a rubber hook nose and hung Peyis on my head from under a black hat, I would be called inappropriate by the Jewish community. If I was a black politician, and painted myself yellow and scotch taped my eyes down, I would be called inappropriate by the Asian community. If I was an Indian politician and painted myself pink and wore a sweater vest I would be called inappropriate by the white community.

This is a "No Brainer", people. Especially for a politician or public official of any sort. This is the same as taking pictures of your junk in your underwear and emailing it to people's phones. This is the same as wearing a rebel battle flag hat to an NAACP meeting. This is the same as wearing a "Nietzsche was right, god is Dead" t-shirt to a midnight mass. It is just DUMB and it's asking for trouble !

This guy was an idiot. His son was an idiot... and anyone who wants to defend this guy on principle has no right to complain in the future about how a Nativity scene wasn't allowed on a street corner or how the 13 commandments were sanded off the side of all the dog catcher's trucks because some agnostic St Bernard's were offended.

The reality is that you can't dictate to other people what they should or shouldn't be offended by, and then cry foul when your own sacred cow has graffiti painted on the side of it.

become a people who, even with no intention of doing harm to a soul, need to fear being pounced upon at any moment for the smallest of unseen missteps. Meanness is the new normal, it seems. People want to feel irate and seek ways to exceed the thrill gotten from their last tantrum. Something is wrong when it's too calm. Very sad indeed.
